Breakups are rarely easy and can stir up self- doubt, confusion and feelings of grief. Yet on the flip side, a breakup also offers a chance to hit pause, reflect, and reconnect with your true- self and grow stronger rather than just “get over it.” Take this time to focus on self-discovery, and clarity about what you want in your next relationship and life. Look at the breakup as a lesson or an exercise that helps you to personally grow.
Here are 6 practical steps to help you move forward:
Feel Your Emotions Fully Allow yourself time to properly grieve the relationship. Writing in a journal or talking to a trusted friend/family member or simply sitting with your feelings can help you process them.
Focus on Self-Care Start exercising if you don’t already, eat healthy, rest and engage in activities you enjoy. These three things will strengthen your body and mind. Taking time out for self-care will reinforce your well-being as a priority.
Reflect and Learn Consider what this former relationship taught you about your needs, boundaries, and values. Avoid dwelling on blame and focus on insight and your personal growth.
Set Boundaries Create space away from social media or triggers that may prolong your heartache. Setting these types of boundaries will help you regain control and clarity.
Visualize Your Future Imagine the life and relationship you want next. What kind of partner or connection aligns with your needs and values? Small steps toward that vision will keep you moving forward in the right direction.
Lean on Support Surround yourself with people who uplift you whether they are positive friends and family, or the means of professional support like that of a life coach or counselor which provide guidance accountability and encouragement.
Keep in mind that healing after a breakup isn’t linear, and some days will naturally be harder than others, but each small step forward and every intentional action of self-care will help you to rebuild your confidence, aid in clarifying what you truly want out of a relationship and give you a new feeling of hope. Take the stance you aren’t just trying to get over a breakup, you’re creating a stronger, more fulfilled version of yourself who will be ready for making meaningful connections when the time comes.
